7 Tips to Relax and Sleep Better

At night we look forward to a good nights sleep, remembering when we slept like a baby.  We say, “If I could just relax and sleep through the night.” Often before heading to bed we are once again filled with all the things that have to be done and hurts we encountered during the day. Frustrations are too numerous to count and compound our stress levels.  All thoughts of sleep seem to evaporate. Emotional upsets play out at night. So try to find ways to minimize any anger with someone before going to bed.

The Institute of Stress studies show that 80% of all illnesses come from stress. Learning a few simple techniques to lower stress and sleep. One of the first questions doctors ask is “How have you been sleeping?” It is a simple question and your answers give the doctor invaluable information in which to help you.

When the body relaxes it releases chemicals such as endorphins that reduce pain and create feelings of well-being. Endorphins are neurotransmitters whose chemical structures are similar to morphine that creates states of joy or euphoria. The body relaxes. Having nightly rituals prepare us for sleep, not only mentally and physically, but psychological as well.  We look forward a restful sleep.

1.  You can start part of this wind-down process with your favorite music or a sleep machine that has sounds of waves, rain, or birds. Learning a language is another way to move your thoughts from work to home.

2.  Aromatherapy has been successfully used to relax the body and calm the mind.  The many choices of fragrances, such as rose, lavender, and new ones such a rain, ocean, or forest or your favorite scent. These can be candles, essential oils, or potpourri.  Have a spa bath with scents. Another way is to enjoy the aroma of our favorite foods.

3.  The sound of water in our homes is an immediate destresser. We can relax with a beautiful fountain.

4.  Write in a journal the things you have accomplished during the day.  Make a written account of what you have to do impresses on your subconscious mind the accomplishments. Keep the journal by your bed and read it often. Journaling gives us insights into ourselves and it gives our unconscious a voice. Patterns are revealed that we were unaware of.

5.  Reading or watching a pleasant show can relax and leave you with a feel-good feeling.

6.  Going to bed at the same time each night conditions you that it is time to unwind.

7.  Make your bedroom an inviting and wonderful place to enter. Create a feeling of a spa you have visited or seen in a magazine. Set the stage for sleep – keep your room clutter-free or at least out-of-sight will help immensely.

Seeing clothes or papers that need to be put away, puts the mind back on active duty.  Use beautiful boxes for paper as a lovely accent or add baskets with lids. This is where you spend one-third of your life. Make it the most enjoyable you can.
