The decision to adopt a lifestyle that is ecologically friendly – that is, friendly to the environment – is a conscious one.  Often, it is the result of local government regulations that require recycling and prohibit the disposal of anything can conceivably be considered hazardous.   But it can also be the result of a particular medical condition, such as an allergy or illness.  And for still others it’s part of a desire to do what has the least effect on the environment.

Whatever the inspiration, there is a growing awareness of eco-friendly organic products that do not rely on chemical pesticides and herbicides, and a corresponding trend to recycled products and sustainable living with reduced reliance on resources.

Household cleaning products have been improved to use chemicals that are less harmful to surfaces, the air, and people using them, and new appliances that use ultraviolet light and steam have been introduced to make cleaning safer and more effective.

The shift in mood goes counter to habits ingrained in the last half of the twentieth century, when conspicuous consumption was the norm in a period of economic growth.  Products were made with the expectation that they would be thrown away when they were considered obsolete, even if they were still usable, and new, time-saving cleaning products and appliances were introduced faster than safety could be assessed.

Certain aspects of a throw-away society remain, notably with the planned obsolescence of cellular telephones, determined not by the usefulness of the device but by the terms of a two-year service contract and the unavailability of batteries and other accessories for older equipment.

Still, device manufacturers and recyclers have been motivated to separate hazardous heavy metals from the rest of the phones, and television, computer, and monitor retailers have started similar recycling programs to make the disposal of their products more environmentally friendly, to keep more hazardous chemicals and metals out of landfills.

The very symbol of conspicuous consumption, the automobile, has been subjected to massive technical and societal changes. Cars and trucks are more efficient, ethanol has helped reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, cars and trucks have been built to run on a combination internal combustion engines and batteries, and consumers have begun to warm to the notion of all-electric cars, an idea that wasn’t even room temperature only a few years ago.

Whatever the inspiration or motivation, society in general has taken notice, and the ideas of reusing materials and segregating dangerous components – on the ‘fringe’ only a decade ago – now get mainstream consideration.

There can be no doubt that the most pervasive, if not the newest, trend is ‘Green’.

Cleaning products, for instance, have become ‘greener,’ more friendly to the environment.  Fewer cleaners require protective clothing and active ventilation, and more have become gentler and less objectionable in the air.

New, renewable  sources of power have been tapped to provide electricity for homes, offices and factories.  The wind can be harnessed more readily and efficiently than ever before, and solar energy is easier and less expensive to capture.  New building codes require new and improved insulation and windows that form more of a barrier between inside and outside.

Automakers have seized the initiative to put millions of dollars into new research to make their cars and trucks more efficient.  They have found new ways to use ethanol to help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, so-called hybrid cars that run on a combination of internal combustion engines and batteries have become commonplace, and manufacturers have broken down some of the traditional consumer objections to all-electric cars.  Research continues into development of hydrogen fuel cells.

While traditional chemicals still make up the largest share of lawn and garden pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, more and more homeowners and landscape professionals are using natural compounds instead, and composting has increased in popularity.  And some cities and counties have developed programs to collect fallen and removed tree branches and shrubs and turn them into mulch for flower beds and decorative parking strips.

Either way, many of us start the preparations early, putting away those things that have been lying around for a while, shampooing the carpets, dusting the furniture, and cleaning the grill.
